EL ROBO DE LA MISSION

THE MISSION DISTRICT HAS A CYCLICAL HISTORY OF BEING BUILT ON COLONIZATION. WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY HOME TO THE OHLONE TRIBE BECAME PROPERTY OF THE SPANISH, UNDERTAKEN BY MANIFEST DESTINY, AN ATTRACTION DURING THE GOLD RUSH, AND NOW THANKS TO THE INTERNET IT IS BEING INFILTRATED BY TECHIES. HOME ANS BUSINESSES OWNED BY WORKING CLASS LATINO COMMUNITIES ARE BEING PUSHED OUT DUE TO COMPETITIVE HOUSING PRICES, AS AFFLUENT WHITE INDIVIDUALS MOVE IN. AS A RESULT, THERE IS A CHANGE IN CULTURE AND A SPIKE IN HOMELESS RATES. IN ORDER TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THIS SITUATION, I CREATED A TAPESTRY; A TACTILE OBJECT THAT FUNCTIONS AS A FLAG SIGNALING THE DISTRESS OF THE MISSION. IT REMINDS US OF THE LOSS OF CULTURE AND URGENT NEED FOR ITS PRESERVATION BY ILLUSTRATING THE NARRATIVE OF GENTRIFICATION HAPPENING IN THE MISSON DISTRICT OF SAN FRANCISCO. BRINGING THIS ISSUE TO LIGHT WILL HOPEFULLY INFORM AND INSPIRE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.
